LAPD and Union Successfully Reach Four-Year Contract Agreement

An agreement has been reached between the Los Angeles Police Department and the union representing police officers, sergeants, detectives, and lieutenants. This agreement, announced by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, aims to enhance recruitment and retention within the department.

The tentative four-year agreement focuses on improving safety measures and increasing the number of personnel in the department.

Mayor Bass stated, “My top priority is the safety of Angelenos. Like many other major cities in America, our police department is facing challenges in hiring and retaining officers. Therefore, we are taking prompt action. In April, I proposed a budget to address concerns within the Los Angeles Police Department, including investments to hire more officers, streamline the hiring process, and enhance retention. The contract reached on Tuesday aligns with these objectives.”

According to data from the mayor’s office, LAPD has experienced a decline of over 1,000 officers since the beginning of 2020. It is projected that the department will lose hundreds more due to retirements and resignations in the upcoming year.

Additionally, LAPD has witnessed the departure of over 430 officers within their first year and a half of service since 2017. A significant portion of these officers opt to join other law enforcement agencies before completing 10 years of service.

Two significant components of the agreement, which is set to expire in 2027, involve increasing the starting base salaries for LAPD recruits and implementing incentives to encourage retention among police officers.

Under the new agreement, the starting base salary for LAPD recruits will see an 11% increase, accompanied by a 3% annual increment in base salary wages for each year of the contract.

In addition, the contract addresses improvements in health, life, and dental insurance benefits.
