Enhancing RAF Ibsley Watch Office: A Unique Landmark Trust Project in New Forest

Introducing an extraordinary fundraising endeavor by The Landmark Trust, a renowned charity dedicated to preserving historic buildings by transforming them into holiday accommodations. While the Trust is well-known for its diverse portfolio of castles, manor houses, charming cottages, and architectural marvels, their newest project is a departure from the norm. They are seeking support to restore RAF Ibsley Watch Office, a utilitarian military structure constructed in 1940. Neglected over the years, the building has fallen victim to vandalism and graffiti.

RAF Ibsley Watch Office, located on the outskirts of the stunning New Forest National Park, served as the control tower and meteorological station for an airfield utilized by the Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Force from 1941 to 1944. Initially functioning as a base for Spitfires, Ibsley later housed over 150 P-47 Thunderbolt fighter bombers. Notably, this site was chosen as the filming location for the 1942 movie “The First of the Few,” featuring Leslie Howard and David Niven. The film aimed to instill confidence in the British public and bolster support for the Spitfire and the war effort as a whole.

The building, commonly referred to as a “Watch Office” in Britain (later replaced by the term “control tower” used by the USAAF), is a rare survivor. Unlike similar structures that were hastily constructed using wood, Ibsley stands out with its slender concrete viewing balcony, originally adorned with Crittall windows from floor to ceiling. Over time, the wooden balconies of other buildings have decayed. Ibsley Watch Office boasts breathtaking views of lakes and woodland, thanks to the transformation of the airfield site into a nature reserve, complete with water-filled gravel pits.

The Landmark Trust envisions converting this historic building into a holiday rental that accommodates up to eight guests. The main operations room is set to undergo a transformative renovation into a spacious open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, offering sweeping views to guests. To undertake this ambitious project, the charity aims to raise £1.03mn of the total £3.1mn budget. Construction work is anticipated to commence next year, with a projected completion date in 2025. Direct Flights from London to Bolzano with SkyAlps: A Game-Changer for Skiers

Exciting news awaits ski enthusiasts! SkyAlps is set to debut direct flights connecting London and Bolzano, nestled in Italy’s captivating South Tyrol region. With the runway a mere 10 miles away from the nearest ski slopes, this development promises incredible convenience for avid skiers.

Originally scheduled to launch in December 2021, the route faced an unexpected setback. SkyAlps, operating as a “virtual airline” under Luxwing, had concerns regarding compliance with UK regulations, leading to the cancellation of the inaugural flight. However, in January of this year, the Italian Civil Aviation Authority granted SkyAlps its own air operator certificate, certifying it as a fully independent airline – a significant milestone for the region, as South Tyrol’s first independent airline. SkyAlps plans to expand its fleet to 14 aircraft by early next year.

The London-Bolzano flights will depart from Stansted on Wednesdays and Sundays, commencing from December 13 until April 14. Passengers will be transported in the comfort of a 76-seat Dash 8 Q400 aircraft. Don’t miss out on this remarkable opportunity to experience the beauty of the Dolomites and the thrill of skiing in South Tyrol. Plan your getaway now at skyalps.com.
