Landmark Decision: U.S. House Votes to Oust Kevin McCarthy from Speaker Role

WASHINGTON — In a historic move on Tuesday, dissident Republicans in the U.S. House joined forces with Democrats to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker. This shocking development occurred just nine months after McCarthy secured the position following extensive negotiations and voting rounds with the GOP’s right wing. The voting outcome left the House in uncharted territory, as no speaker has ever been removed before. Representative Patrick McHenry of North Carolina was named speaker pro tempore until a new speaker is elected. The vote to vacate the speaker’s position was 216-210, with several Republican representatives such as Matt Gaetz, Bob Good, and Nancy Mace voting in favor of removal. The House Democrats unanimously voted to declare the position vacant. This is only the third time in history that a motion to vacate has been filed, with prior instances occurring in March 1910 and July 2015. McCarthy, prior to the vote, expressed his confidence that Gaetz’s motion would fail but acknowledged that he may lose the position over his decision to prioritize bipartisanship and passing a short-term spending bill. McCarthy’s support of the bill prevented a partial government shutdown, which he believed was the right decision. He vowed to continue fighting regardless of the outcome.
