Lance Bass Opens Up About Avoiding Helicopter Parenting with His Twins

  • Lance Bass and his husband, Michael Turchin, joyfully welcomed their twins in 2021.
  • Their almost 2-year-old twins are enthusiastically learning English, Spanish, and Mandarin.
  • Bass expresses his desire to avoid becoming an overprotective parent.

Lance Bass plans to take his toddler twins to his hometown in Mississippi to visit family this summer. Subsequently, similar to other parents, he intends to leave the kids with their grandparents for some much-needed alone time with his husband.

“They will have summer camp with my parents,” revealed Bass to Insider.

The former NSYNC singer and his husband, Michael Turchin, proudly became fathers to Violet Betty and Alexander James, who were brought into the world through surrogacy in October 2021. With the twins approaching their second birthday, Bass notices their emerging personalities, especially Alexander’s mischievous streak.

“They are currently trying to get into as much trouble as they can,” he shared. “He is always instigating things with her. That seems to be his specialty going forward.”

Bass remains unfazed by the notion of the “terrible twos.”

“They can be quite mischievous, especially my son,” Bass remarks. “But that’s alright — I enjoy their mischievousness.”

Bass aims for a balance between independence and safety for his twins

Bass has no desire to be an overprotective parent to Violet and Alexander. He deliberately creates situations where the twins believe they are on their own to observe and learn from their actions. Often, this results in Alexander pushing his sister’s buttons.

“We try to provide them with as much freedom as possible for learning and experiences,” he explained. “Sometimes, you have to let them fall off the couch to understand the concept of gravity.”

However, Bass prioritizes their safety. Lately, Alexander’s curious nature extends to everything, including remote controls. For this reason, Bass partnered with Duracell to promote batteries coated with a non-toxic but bitter substance. The hope is that if curious toddlers like Alexander put these batteries in their mouths, they will spit them out, avoiding a potential medical emergency.

The twins are already learning three languages

Unlike Bass, who only speaks English, he aspires for Alexander and Violet to become fluent in multiple languages. Together with Turchin, they expose the children to Spanish and Mandarin.

“That is one thing I am determined to give them,” asserted Bass. “The more languages they can speak fluently, the better, as the world becomes increasingly interconnected.”

While he cherishes every moment with his children, taking advice from friends with older kids, Bass cannot help but consider the future with Violet and Alexander.

“I am already envisioning their wedding and my grandkids,” he expressed. “Their preferences, musical talents, and athletic interests. I want to witness their development and passions.”

Bass eagerly awaits downtime this summer

Despite having a busy summer schedule, Bass eagerly anticipates spending quality time with both his family and some personal time without the babies. The entire family will travel to Mississippi to visit Bass’s relatives, including his 95-year-old grandparents.

“I love seeing them interact with my grandparents,” he shared. “It’s incredible that my youngest great-grandchildren have the opportunity to spend time with them.”

Most of Violet and Alexander’s cousins are older, but the toddlers have developed an obsession with them, according to Bass. While the twins stay with family, Bass and Turchin plan to embark on a road trip filled with outdoor activities and spa visits — which is Bass’s preferred way to recharge.

“That replenishes my energy and contributes to me being a much better person,” he stated. “We were always advised to make time for ourselves.”

That is a lesson Bass desires to impart to his twins as they grow older. He wants them to always feel secure and know they can confide in him about anything.

“I simply aim to be an empathetic father,” he expressed. “I want them to feel loved and understand the true meaning of courage.”
