Overnight, a massive brush fire in the Lakeview area continued to spread, but progress was made on Saturday as crews established a containment line around the blaze.
According to the Riverside County Fire Department, the Rabbit Fire is currently estimated at 4,500 acres with 5% containment as of Saturday morning.
The fire was first reported on Friday at around 3:25 p.m. in the vicinity of Jack Rabbit Trail and Allesandro Boulevard, just east of Mystic Lake and roughly halfway between Moreno Valley and San Jacinto.
One individual suffered burn injuries when the fire started, possibly due to being in or near a vehicle that caught fire. The victim was transported to Riverside University Health System-Medical Center in Moreno Valley for treatment.
By 7:30 p.m. on Friday, the fire had already consumed more than 2,800 acres as the flames rapidly spread through open space.
Officers from the California Highway Patrol and sheriff’s deputies redirected northbound traffic away from Gilman Springs Road and onto Bridge Street. Additionally, Highway 79 in the Lambs Canyon area was closed from Gilman Springs Road to California Avenue.
An evacuation order for approximately 25 homes north of Gilman Springs Road was issued shortly before 9 p.m. on Friday. However, fire officials have now indicated that there are currently no evacuation orders in place.
