LAFD’s Explosive Display Highlights Illegal Fireworks’ Power and Danger – Orange County Register

La’veyah Mosely engaged in a post-Independence Day tradition last summer, playing with friends and family. This tradition involved shooting off fireworks and enjoying time in the street on July 5. However, an unfortunate incident took place during this celebration that would forever change Mosely’s life.

A neighbor mistakenly picked up an unexploded firework, believing it to be a harmless sparkler. Unbeknownst to both of them, this firework was actually an M-80, a powerful explosive packed with flash powder that is prohibited in California. Mosely was handed the firework and proceeded to light it, igniting a chain of events that would have devastating consequences.

In the aftermath of the explosion, Mosely spoke to reporters at a Los Angeles Fire Department training center near Dodgers Stadium. She courageously detailed the extent of her injuries, revealing that she had lost all of the fingers on her left hand due to the explosion.

Mosely’s appearance at the training center on June 30 was part of an effort by fire and law enforcement officials to raise awareness about the dangers of illegal fireworks in anticipation of the upcoming July 4th holiday. Daniel Berlant, California’s acting fire marshal, highlighted the types of fireworks that authorities would be vigilant about, emphasizing that anything that explodes, ascends into the air, or moves uncontrollably on the ground is considered illegal.

LAFD Fire Chief Kristin Crowley shared that her department had confiscated 250,000 pounds of illegal fireworks since the previous year’s July 4th celebration. In the city alone, fireworks had caused 16 injuries and $1 million worth of property damage.

To emphasize the potency of illegal fireworks, officials conducted a demonstration featuring three watermelons rigged with explosives. As the explosives handler initiated the countdown, each watermelon was obliterated by a thunderous blast, with pieces of fruit cascading down onto the pavement.

This poignant display serves as a reminder of the destructive power and potential harm associated with illegal fireworks. As the region braces for another July 4th holiday, it is essential to prioritize safety and adhere to regulations to prevent injuries and property damage.
