Lack of ‘Rigor and Discipline’ Discovered by James Cameron in OceanGate

  • Hollywood filmmaker and deep-sea explorer James Cameron criticized OceanGate for lacking “rigor and discipline” following the tragic Titan disaster.
  • Cameron called for stricter regulations on deep-sea vessels during an event in Ontario, Canada.

Hollywood filmmaker and underwater explorer James Cameron expressed concern over OceanGate’s lack of “rigor and discipline” following the tragic implosion of the Titan submersible, which resulted in the loss of all five crew members. Cameron called for increased regulations on deep-sea vessels in light of the incident.

During an event at the headquarters of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society in Ontario, Cameron described the implosion of the Titan sub as an “extreme outlier” in terms of safety records in deep-sea exploration, according to CBC News.

Cameron, who has visited the Titanic wreck site 33 times, emphasized the need for precautions and stated that the Titan disaster serves as a reminder of the possibility of human failure. He mourned the loss of his friend, French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who was among the victims.

Referring to OceanGate, Cameron criticized the company’s lack of rigor and discipline in preventing such tragedies, stating that they did not approach the mission with the required attention to detail and safety.

Cameron called for new regulations in deep-sea exploration, advocating for the same level of scrutiny given to ships and fishing boats to also be extended to passenger vehicles like the Titan sub, according to the Ottawa Citizen.

These statements were made by Cameron at the opening of an exhibit showcasing the Deepsea Challenger submersible, which he piloted to the ocean’s deepest point in the Mariana Trench in 2012.
