‘Lack of diversity’ in ‘Love Actually’ makes director feel ‘rather foolish’

As the holiday season approaches and the temperature drops, “Love Actually” quickly becomes a beloved film for many viewers.

However, nearly 20 years after its release, the movie has faced criticism for its storylines and lack of diversity.

During an interview for the ABC News documentary titled “The Laughter & Secrets of Love Actually: 20 Years Later,” the film’s writer and director, Richard Curtis, acknowledged that there are moments in the movie that may feel outdated due to societal changes.

The documentary, featuring Curtis being interviewed by Diane Sawyer, explores the impact and legacy of “Love Actually” two decades after its release.

“Love Actually” tells multiple interconnected romantic stories, but the majority of the main cast is White and all the relationships depicted are heterosexual.

When asked about any moments that may make him feel uncomfortable, Curtis expressed unease with the lack of diversity in the film and acknowledged the presence of three storylines involving bosses and their subordinates.

“Love Actually” boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Keira Knightley, Bill Nighy, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Martin Freeman, Laura Linney, Martine McCutcheon, Rowan Atkinson, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

Hugh Grant plays the British prime minister who falls in love with his assistant, played by Martine McCutcheon.

Almost two decades later, “Love Actually” continues to be a popular film and a holiday season tradition.

Bill Nighy, one of the film’s stars, expressed amazement at how the movie has become a cultural phenomenon and entered people’s everyday language.

Nighy shared anecdotes of people approaching him and expressing how “Love Actually” has helped them through difficult times, such as chemotherapy or divorce. The film has even inspired the hosting of “Love Actually” parties.
