Labour frontbencher calls for the removal of two-child benefit cap due to lack of funds

A Labour frontbencher has stated that there is no available funding to lift the two-child benefit cap, sparking a growing revolt within the party. Sir Keir Starmer, facing criticism from his own MPs, confirmed his intention to maintain the limit if elected, contradicting his promise to overturn it during his 2020 leadership campaign. The policy, implemented by George Osborne, has been labelled “heinous” by Jonathan Ashworth, the shadow work and pensions secretary, with even Sir Keir’s deputy, Angela Rayner, expressing criticism. Speaking on Times Radio, Ms Powell acknowledged the challenging economic situation, attributing it to 13 years of Conservative government. She explained that the party is unable to fulfill all its goals in the first term due to financial constraints, coining the phrase “there’s no money left”. This phrase echoes a note left by former Labour chief secretary to the Treasury, Liam Byrne, who humorously wrote “Dear chief secretary, I’m afraid there is no money. Kind regards – and good luck!” in 2010.
