Labour claims UK businesses face a £3.5bn energy surcharge as a form of punishment

Labour has announced its commitment to achieving clean energy by 2030 and claims that the Conservative ban on onshore wind has resulted in a significant loss of capacity. It also stated that energy-intensive industries have suffered a loss of 11,000 jobs in the past eight years. In contrast, Chancellor Rishi Sunak recently stated that the approval of two carbon capture projects in Scotland and the Humber would create 50,000 jobs and help the UK in reaching its net-zero emissions target by 2050. Jonathan Reynolds, Labour’s shadow business secretary, criticized the Conservatives’ energy policy, stating that it has negatively impacted families and businesses, making the UK the worst-affected country in Western Europe during the energy crisis. He highlighted that high energy costs hinder business growth and investment, as well as lead to price increases. Labour’s plan aims to reduce industrial energy costs, resulting in £28 billion in savings for British industry over the coming years. This would benefit high street businesses, saving them over £21 billion, and potentially decrease food production costs by nearly £5 billion, which could be passed on to consumers.
