A witness statement provided by Ellie Nicholson from the Cabinet Office reveals an interesting revelation about the British government’s possession of Boris Johnson’s phones. In her statement, Ms Nicholson explains that the WhatsApp material is currently being reviewed for both national security concerns and irrelevant information. They are applying appropriate redactions to ensure the material’s relevance. Interestingly, the review has revealed that there are no WhatsApp communications before May 2021.
Furthermore, Ms Nicholson highlights that Johnson made the decision to implement security advice regarding his mobile phone in April 2021, following a widely publicized security breach. It is believed that Johnson still possesses the device, which is considered his personal phone.
On May 31, the Cabinet Office contacted Mr Johnson’s legal representatives to inquire about the phone’s possession and requested confirmation from Johnson himself. They explained that if the phone could be handed over to the government, it could be assessed by security experts. However, as of the morning of June 1, the Cabinet Office has yet to receive a substantive response. Since the Cabinet Office does not currently have possession of the phone, any data stored on it is outside of their control.
