LA District 6 Special Election Comes to a Close

The deadline to cast your vote in the special election for the Sixth District Los Angeles City Council seat is Tuesday. This election is between Imelda Padilla and Marisa Alcaraz, who are vying to fill the seat vacated by former Council President Nury Martinez when she resigned.

Padilla, a community relations manager, led the field of seven candidates in the initial round of voting on April 4 with 25.65% of the vote. However, since she did not secure a majority, a runoff against Alcaraz, a City Council aide who was second with 21.13%, is necessary.

Padilla expressed her optimism for the communities of CD 6, which has been without a representative since Martinez’s resignation in November 2022. She emphasized the importance of local elections and their impact on daily life, hoping that her campaign has energized and motivated constituents to exercise their right to vote.

Alcaraz, accompanied by her daughter, submitted her ballot late Tuesday morning. She expressed pride in the campaign they have run, the endorsements they have received from labor unions and coalitions, and the team they have built. Reflecting on the low turnout in the April election, she urged voters in the Sixth District to conduct thorough research, consider campaign backers, and cast their votes.

Both candidates have outlined their priorities. Padilla is committed to finding an immediate solution to the unhoused crisis by proposing an emergency remediation of encampments and connecting the unhoused population to essential services for housing, employment, and healthcare. She aims to collaborate with various stakeholders and organizations to develop localized solutions for safer and sustainable communities.

Alcaraz, on the other hand, emphasizes helping people without homes find housing and receive the necessary care to get back on their feet. She advocates for investing in outreach teams, utilizing government properties for temporary shelter, and acquiring vacant properties for long-term housing development. Additionally, she proposes the establishment of a Homeless Navigation Center for comprehensive services.

Padilla, born and raised in Van Nuys and Sun Valley, has an educational background from UC Berkeley and Cal State Northridge. Alcaraz, raised in Lake Balboa and a graduate of UC Irvine and USC, currently serves as deputy chief of staff and environmental policy director to Councilman Curren Price in the Ninth District.

The Sixth District comprises Van Nuys, Arleta, Lake Balboa, Panorama City, Sun Valley, and parts of North Hills and North Hollywood.

All registered voters in the district received a vote-by-mail ballot in late May. Voting can be done at various locations from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and there are also vote-by-mail drop boxes available.

The winner of this election will complete Martinez’s term, which concludes in December 2024.
