LA Department of Transportation Manager Appointed by Bass

Mayor Karen Bass announced on Tuesday the selection of Laura Rubio-Cornejo, the Pasadena transportation director, as the new general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Transportation. With over 20 years of experience in municipal, regional, and state transportation, Rubio-Cornejo brings a wealth of expertise to the position. Before this appointment can be finalized, it must receive approval from the Los Angeles City Council.

Mayor Bass emphasized the need for safer neighborhoods and better connectivity in her announcement. She praised Rubio-Cornejo as a proven implementer who consistently delivers projects on time and within budget. The mayor expressed confidence that Rubio-Cornejo, with her dedication to equity and real solutions, would guide the department in making streets safer and preparing for major upcoming events.

Rubio-Cornejo will be succeeding Connie Llanos, who has served as the interim general manager of DOT for the past 14 months. Mayor Bass commended Llanos for her steady and thorough leadership, which has greatly benefited the city and its residents.

Rubio-Cornejo expressed her excitement and honor at the opportunity to become the next general manager of DOT. She looks forward to collaborating with staff, other departments, and the community to deliver multi-modal transportation solutions that will enhance the safety, accessibility, and livability of Los Angeles neighborhoods.

Industry leaders, Stephanie Wiggins (CEO of Metro) and Hilary Norton (California Transportation commissioner and executive director of FASTLinkDTLA), voiced their support for Rubio-Cornejo’s appointment. They highlighted her deep transit experience, commitment to collaboration, and understanding of the region’s transportation challenges.

Norton, who has worked closely with Rubio-Cornejo in the past, praised her project delivery record, ability to coordinate complex initiatives, and commitment to advancing equity as major assets for the City of Los Angeles.
