The father of Dijon Kizzee, a 29-year-old Black man who was shot and killed by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies in 2020, has reached a conditional settlement of his lawsuit against the county. The lawsuit, filed in September 2021, alleged civil rights violations, assault and battery, false imprisonment, and negligence, and contended that Dijon Kizzee’s death was directly caused by the “improper influence of rogue deputy gangs within the sheriff’s department.” The terms of the tentative settlement were not disclosed. The defense attorneys for the county maintained that the deputies acted in good faith and without malicious intent, but the suit claimed that they used excessive force and that the county failed to properly train them. The deputies initially stopped Dijon Kizzee, who was riding his bike on the wrong side of the street, and he was shot 19 times after allegedly picking up a gun during a confrontation with the deputies. The plaintiffs maintained that he was unarmed, had his hands in the air, and was shot repeatedly while on the ground. They also alleged that the deputies unreasonably delayed getting him medical assistance.
