LA City Council Requests Criminal Investigation into the Governor of Texas

In a display of concern regarding the busloads of migrants arriving from Texas, the Los Angeles City Council has passed a motion calling for an investigation into potential crimes committed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. The motion requests the City Attorney’s Office to begin legal proceedings against Texas, Abbott, or any other entities involved in planning and executing the transportation of migrants to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.

The motion was introduced on June 16 by council members Eunisses Hernandez, Nithya Raman, Monica Rodriguez, and Hugo Soto-Martínez. It received unanimous approval from the council, with the exception of Hernandez and Councilman Curren Price, who were absent during the vote.

Since June 14, Texas has sent a total of 435 migrants on 11 buses to Los Angeles. The most recent bus, carrying 35 asylum seekers from various countries, arrived on Wednesday. The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights provided this information.

Both Abbott and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has also transported migrants to New York, have defended their decisions by citing overwhelming numbers of undocumented immigrants in their respective states. Abbott specifically referenced the recent declaration of Los Angeles as a “Sanctuary City” by the City Council. However, Councilman Soto-Martínez criticized their actions as a failure of effective governance and accused them of engaging in a competition to be more racist.

Soto-Martínez drew attention to an incident a couple of weeks ago, during which Abbott knowingly sent a bus with migrants, including children, to Los Angeles while the city was preparing for the arrival of Tropical Storm Hilary. Soto-Martínez expressed deep concern for the safety and wellbeing of these families and called for a thorough investigation into Abbott’s actions.

Abbott’s office has not yet responded to City News Service’s request for comment on the council’s actions. In addition to the motion, the council also passed a resolution calling for investigations by Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, State Attorney General Rob Bonta, and U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The resolution further urges the county, state, and federal governments to provide the necessary support and resources to ensure a dignified welcome for the migrants in Los Angeles.

Abbott, in response, argued that small border towns in Texas are overwhelmed due to President Biden’s failure to secure the border and claimed that migrants are seeking to go to Los Angeles, especially since it has declared itself a sanctuary city. He expressed his commitment to providing relief to the border communities until President Biden takes action.

Los Angeles officially established itself as a sanctuary city on June 9 with the approval of a separate motion. Councilman Kevin de León stressed that Abbott has no incentive to change his actions and emphasized Los Angeles’ commitment to accepting and caring for immigrants. He also criticized the lack of immigration reform in Washington, D.C. for nearly four decades, which has exacerbated the situation.

Councilwoman Imelda Padilla condemned Abbott’s actions as a degrading form of political theater, particularly in light of the struggles and dangers faced by immigrants seeking asylum. Mayor Bass expressed frustration over the lack of coordination and communication from the Texas government regarding the buses of migrants arriving in Los Angeles.

Mayor Bass emphasized that they are only informed about the buses when they are already en route, leaving them unaware of who will arrive, how many people there will be, or their condition upon arrival. This lack of information has led to instances where the migrants have not had enough food or water during their journey.
