L.A. City Council Commences Festive Latino Heritage Month Celebration

The Los Angeles City Council kicked off Latino Heritage Month 2023 by honoring four remarkable individuals during ceremonies at City Hall. Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, this year’s Latino Heritage Month “madrina,” led the recognitions, as the council honored Maria Lou Calanche, Ruben Rodriguez, Teresa Romero, and Guillermo Rodriguez.

Latino Heritage Month spans from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 and includes numerous events throughout the city. Monica Rodriguez referred to the honorees as the “most amazing individuals” but acknowledged that they only represent a small portion of the contributions made by the Latino community.

During the ceremony, Councilwoman Rodriguez introduced Maria Lou Calanche, praising her dedication to youth development. Calanche, who also serves as a commissioner on the city’s Police Commission, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to create and expand learning opportunities for L.A.’s youth through her nonprofit organization, Expand L.A.

Ruben Rodriguez, the executive director of Pueblo y Salud, was recognized for his advocacy work in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. He emphasized the importance of countering the negative portrayal of the Latino community in the media and recognizing the contributions of undocumented workers.

Teresa Romero, president of the United Farm Workers, echoed Ruben’s sentiments on uplifting immigrant workers. She highlighted the essential role of farm workers during the pandemic in ensuring food security for everyone.

Councilwoman Rodriguez introduced Guillermo Rodriguez, known for his work on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” Guillermo encouraged Latino kids to follow their dreams, work hard, and believe in themselves.

To celebrate the official start of Latino Heritage Month, the city will host the 81st annual El Grito, which includes the reenactment of the Cry of Dolores and a concert with live performances by Banda Machos, Las Colibrí, Las Cafeteras, and Banda Las Angelinas.
