Kyle Shanahan: Despite surgery, 49ers’ Brock Purdy remains the genuine talent

The San Francisco 49ers have expressed unwavering confidence in their young quarterback, Brock Purdy, despite concerns over his recent Tommy John surgery and elbow injury suffered in the NFC Championship Game. Head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged that Purdy still has some progress to make before reaching his peak performance but emphasized that the team is not worried about his development. Shanahan praised Purdy’s skills and asserted that the team will continue to improve alongside him.

Addressing Purdy’s injury, Shanahan stated that he is no longer concerned about it as the quarterback has fully healed. He acknowledged that it takes time for players to regain their throwing shape and become accustomed to playing again. Nevertheless, Shanahan assured that he has put the injury out of his mind.

The quarterback situation in San Francisco has been a topic of discussion, especially with the underwhelming performance of the team’s 2021 No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance, and the offseason signing of Sam Darnold. However, Shanahan’s comments indicate that as long as Purdy remains healthy, he will maintain the starting role. Purdy made a significant impact as a rookie, leading the 49ers to the conference championship game, throwing for 1,374 yards and 13 touchdowns with only four interceptions in the regular season. He took over from an injured Jimmy Garoppolo in December and won his first seven starts, including two playoff games.

On the other hand, Lance’s stint as the starter was cut short due to a season-ending ankle injury.
