Kremlin suggests possible intentional downing of Prigozhin’s plane, says National

The Kremlin released a statement on Wednesday stating that investigators are considering the possibility that Yevgeny Prigozhin, the mercenary chief, was deliberately assassinated. This is the first time the Kremlin has explicitly acknowledged this possibility. When asked about the investigation, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, “It is obvious that different versions are being considered, including the possibility of a deliberate atrocity.” Peskov also mentioned that the International Civil Aviation Organization may not investigate the crash due to the unique circumstances surrounding it. However, he emphasized that no formal conclusions have been made yet and that they are waiting for the results of the Russian investigation.

The private jet carrying Prigozhin crashed near Moscow, killing all 10 people on board, including two other high-ranking Wagner figures, Prigozhin’s bodyguards, and the crew. The cause of the crash is still unclear, but witnesses reported hearing a bang before the plane went down. The crash occurred exactly two months after Prigozhin took control of Rostov, which marked the beginning of a mutiny that shook Putin’s Russia.

Russia has informed Brazil’s aircraft investigation authority that they will not conduct an international investigation into the crash at the moment. Peskov clarified that the investigation is currently being conducted by the Investigative Committee of Russia and that there is no international aspect to the case.

The day after the crash, Putin expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and described Prigozhin as a talented businessman with a difficult fate who made serious mistakes in life. The Kremlin has strongly denied the suggestion that Putin ordered Prigozhin’s assassination, dismissing it as an “absolute lie” without evidence.

Since Prigozhin’s death, Putin has ordered Wagner fighters to pledge their allegiance to the Russian state. This is a step that Prigozhin opposed due to his dissatisfaction with the defense ministry’s handling of the Ukraine war. Followers of Prigozhin have paid tribute to him at his grave, considering him a fearless warrior.

In life, Prigozhin boasted about being one of the world’s most feared mercenaries, commanding the best fighting force. However, critics, including the United States, portrayed him as a brutal commander who exploited African nations and resorted to extreme violence against his enemies. Despite his success in capturing Bakhmut in the bloodiest battle of the Ukraine war, Prigozhin grew angry with what he perceived as the military’s betrayal and warned of the potential loss of the entire war.
