Knicks’ Mitchell Robinson Offers Support to High School Coach after Tragic Loss

Standing at 7 feet tall, the New York Knicks’ center, Mitchell Robinson, is renowned for blocking shots and grabbing rebounds. However, his high school coach — now his roommate — recently revealed a remarkable act of kindness during a game interview on Thursday.

Butch Stockton, during the Knicks broadcast, shared a heartwarming story of Robinson visiting Stockton’s wife, Dawn, in the hospital daily. After her passing in September, Robinson invited his old coach to move in with him, affirming it at her funeral. Stockton coached the Knicks’ towering player at Chalmette High School in Louisiana.

“He said ‘Coach, no reason to stay down here in Louisiana. You come to New York with me and enjoy yourself and get your mind back straight because you know how much you loved your wife,'” Stockton recounted. “It’s just been a great situation.”

Dawn Stockton passed away at the age of 70 after battling metastatic cancer. She was married to Butch for 31 years, as mentioned in her AL.com obituary.

After grabbing nine rebounds and scoring six points during the Knicks’ win over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night, Robinson told reporters that his coach is a “great guy” who helped him “go to where I’m at.”

“It works out for the best,” Robinson said. “I help him out, he helped me.” Robinson affirmed that his coach would be living with him for the rest of the year.

In a 2018 interview, Stockton mentioned noticing a “tall kid walking in the neighborhood” after Robinson and his family moved to St. Bernard Parish in Louisiana. He went on to recruit him for the high school basketball team and assured his mother that the teenager would “have a chance to make it” to the next level of basketball.

“One thing I tell everyone, Mitchell Robinson was always the first one in the gym, every day, and the last one to leave the gym every day,” Stockton told MSG Networks.

Robinson joined the Knicks after being drafted in 2018 and became one of the NBA’s top offensive rebounders.
