Klopp displeased with Mac Allister red card in Liverpool match

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp strongly defended Alexis Mac Allister, claiming that the red card he received against Bournemouth was undeserved. Despite being reduced to 10 men, Liverpool showed great resilience and ultimately secured a 3-1 victory at Anfield on Saturday.

Mac Allister, who joined Liverpool from Brighton during the summer transfer window, was sent off in the 58th minute for a high tackle. As a result, the Argentine midfielder will now face a three-match suspension.

The red card decision appeared to be debatable, with Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola stating after the match that it “did not seem like a red card.”

Klopp shared the same opinion as his counterpart and expressed it during an interview with Sky Sports: “I completely understand how it may have seemed to the referee in the heat of the moment, but upon reviewing it, it was a tackle with the inside of the foot and devoid of any force.”

“We have seen harsher challenges that did not result in a red card, and this should not have been one. I’m not sure what needs to be done exactly, but it’s a topic that should be revisited.”

Liverpool faced an early setback as they conceded a goal within the first five minutes, having had a goal disallowed for offside themselves. However, they showed remarkable determination and managed to turn the game around, with goals from Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota securing the victory after Luis Díaz equalized Semenyo’s strike.

“It was a dreadful start to the game. I believe the first goal we conceded was offside, acting as a wake-up call. It happens. Unfortunately, we then allowed a regular goal just a minute later, which was not ideal,” Klopp admitted.

“After a few minutes to shake off the disappointment, we were excellent. The second half completely changed because suddenly we were down to 10 men, yet we still scored the third goal, which was crucial at that moment.

“It injected us with energy. It’s only the second match of the season and it was tough. Surprisingly, it was scorching hot today, adding to the intensity for the players. However, we fought through it, didn’t concede any further goals, earned the three points, and that’s all that matters to me.”

Klopp highlighted that Liverpool responded better to conceding against Bournemouth compared to their season-opener, a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

“Once we regained our composure, we played in the areas we needed to and remained composed, which is commendable,” Klopp commented.

“After the Chelsea match, I mentioned that when we conceded a goal, we seemed to panic. I didn’t see that today. We managed to find our way back into the game and executed our desired style of play.”

Next, Liverpool will travel to face Newcastle United.
