Kirk Cameron and Riley Gaines’ Book Event at Alabama Library Canceled Due to Hosting Constraints

Just two days before the scheduled stop at Madison Public Library in Huntsville, Alabama, on Saturday, August 5, actor-writer Kirk Cameron, along with his publisher Brave Books and special guest Riley Gaines, women’s sports advocate, have been informed that they will not be able to proceed with the event. The Huntsville-Madison County Public Library System stated in a release on Wednesday that they are unable to accommodate the book reading event. However, the Brave Books team is disputing this decision.

In their press release, the library system stated, “The Moms for Liberty organization had planned to feature Brave Books in a meeting room at Madison Public Library [this coming Saturday]. Due to the event’s anticipated attendance increasing beyond the Library’s capacity, the Library will be unable to host the event.”

The library system initially received reports that 20 attendees were expected, but later learned that there are now over 300 people anticipated, which exceeds the capacity of any meeting room within their system. They explored options to make the event work but ultimately, after consulting with the police, fire marshal, and city officials, they concluded that the event should be held at an alternate location.

The Moms for Liberty group failed to apply for an event permit in advance, and due to the short notice, the city’s resources cannot support an event of this size. Alternative accommodations have been suggested to ensure a safe and well-attended event.

The library system emphasizes that they welcome all individuals and groups to use their facilities and that the safety of the attendees and staff is of utmost importance. They have notified Moms for Liberty and Brave Books that the library venue is no longer available.

In response to the cancellation, Kirk Cameron and Brave Books have reached out to the library system, mentioning that the cancellation may constitute unlawful and unconstitutional religious viewpoint and content discrimination. They have requested a response confirming their ability to utilize the library for the event, and if the request is denied, they are prepared to defend their clients’ civil rights in court.

Despite the cancellation, Kirk Cameron and Brave Books are proceeding with their planned events and library stops on Saturday. They will be visiting three libraries, including Hendersonville Public Library in Tennessee, Madison Public Library in Alabama, and Taylor Public Library in Texas.

Brave Books has reported that over 300 libraries across 46 states will be participating in the “See You at the Library” event. The publisher encourages Americans to reserve space at their local libraries and supports the promotion of wholesome, traditional, and patriotic values.

Overall, the event cancellation has created controversy and legal disputes, highlighting the importance of free speech and the protection of civil rights.
