Key China Issues to Monitor in the Republican Debate

When Republicans face off on Wednesday night, expect fiery rhetoric regarding the sorry state of Bidenomics, the border crisis, and the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target President Biden’s political adversaries.

However, one major issue that deserves attention is the rapid economic collapse of the People’s Republic of China and the increasing likelihood of conflict in the Pacific.

Xi Jinping, the leader of the powerful Chinese Communist Party (CCP), is running out of options. Xi, who possesses the cunning and ruthlessness of a mafia boss but lacks intellectual depth, has destroyed China’s economy by demanding complete political control over all economic activities.

Foreign investment has dried up, except from Germany, and multinational corporations are leaving. Exports are plummeting. The highly inflated real estate market, which accounts for around 30% of China’s economy, is collapsing, making the 2008 Lehman Brothers crisis in America look like child’s play.

Xi unilaterally canceled the CCP’s agreement with the Chinese people, where increasing levels of prosperity were traded for no freedom. However, the people are powerless to do anything about it, posing a threat to China’s stability.

Signs of trouble have emerged from China, such as the alarming decline in the fertility rate to 1.09 babies per woman in 2022, a 16% drop from 2020. This suggests that the average Chinese family has little confidence in the future.

Additionally, there has been an 800% surge in illegal border crossings by Chinese nationals, likely driven by an approaching youth unemployment rate of 40%.

Unlike in a normal country where the people have some say in who governs them, the CCP will never relinquish power without a violent struggle.

With China facing a range of unfavorable options, what should Americans know about the Republican candidates’ positions on the most threatening geopolitical challenge America has encountered since the War of 1812?

A key approach for countering China is to make it personal.

Firstly, in the event that China’s supreme leader Xi decides to invade Taiwan to rally nationalist sentiment among the restive populace, what is America’s stake in the conflict? Is our support for Taiwan driven by strategic necessity to prevent the PRC from controlling the lynchpin of the First Island Chain? Or is it because Taiwan is a democracy? Alternatively, do we shrink back in fear of China’s nuclear threats and withdraw across the Pacific?

Secondly, as China’s economy shrinks and the Chinese are compelled to sell off assets like their substantial dollar holdings to stabilize the economy, should we continue to decouple our economies? Would further decoupling provoke aggression from the PRC, considering that they would have even less to lose in a war?

Thirdly, with mounting evidence that China is supplying Russia with crucial electronic components and other hardware for its illegal invasion of Ukraine, should we view the PRC as a de facto ally of Russia in this conflict? If so, what measures should we take?

This last question raises concerns about the extreme danger we face while President Biden, who is experiencing cognitive decline, mismanages affairs from the White House. China has been preparing for a conflict with the US for many years, and America is only now realizing it.

The surge of Chinese nationals crossing the border into the US raises the question of whether some of them might be infiltrating to carry out sabotage operations in the future. We may not learn the truth until it’s too late because Biden’s border crisis has prevented Border Patrol from conducting routine interrogations of illegal migrants, as they have done in the past.

Furthermore, China has infiltrated critical infrastructure in the US. During the Trump administration, steps were taken to address this threat by banning the import of large electrical transformers from China after discovering kill switches in them. However, Biden promptly reversed this ban. Shouldn’t we be serious about inspecting and eliminating this threat?

Even more concerning, up to 95% of the basic ingredients used to manufacture medications worldwide are now sourced from China. A disruption in the supply chain due to war or Chinese retaliation would jeopardize the lives of millions.

The People’s Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party pose an existential threat to America. The American people deserve to hear from potential presidents about their plans to confront and defeat this threat.
