Kevin De Leon, LA City Councilman, Introduces Inaugural ADU Standard Plan without Any Costs

City Councilman Kevin de Leon of Los Angeles has introduced a groundbreaking initiative – the city’s first-ever pre-approved, free Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Standard Plan. This plan aims to address the housing shortage in the city by streamlining the approval process and cutting red tape.

De Leon has dedicated discretionary funds to spearhead the development of the ADU Standard Plan, recognizing the struggle that residents face in finding and maintaining affordable housing. With the city’s high cost of living and increasing housing demand, the burden on residents has become overwhelming.

As the nation’s homeless capital, Los Angeles understands the urgent need for bold action and diverse housing options. The ADU Standard Plan will allow homeowners to save between $20,000 and $30,000 in architectural and design costs. By eliminating these expenses, residents can allocate their resources to other needs while constructing an ADU.

Furthermore, the streamlined approval process will enable Angelenos to build ADUs on their properties faster, contributing to the city’s housing supply. Over 200,000 single-family parcels in the city are eligible to utilize the plan, potentially resulting in thousands of new dwelling units.

During a press conference, Councilman de Leon expressed gratitude for the collaboration between the Department of Building and Safety, L.A.’s Bureau of Engineering, Lehrer Architects, and Kadre Architects, which made the ADU Standard Plan possible. He also acknowledged the need for policy reforms and further streamlining efforts to construct various housing types, from ADUs to apartment complexes.
