Kentucky Train Derailment Investigation Reveals Thanksgiving Evacuation Cause

Following a statement from CSX on Sunday, it has been revealed that a malfunctioning wheel bearing led to the train derailment in Rockcastle County during the Thanksgiving holiday. CSX also confirmed that the derailed cars have been recovered, and efforts are in place to restore the affected area.

In appreciation of the support provided by Rockcastle County authorities and the local community during the incident, CSX expressed gratitude in a news release. Special thanks were extended to the community members and local businesses that assisted in providing aid and support to affected residents, including coordinating Thanksgiving dinners.

The incident occurred north of Livingston on Wednesday afternoon, involving 16 railcars, two of which were carrying molten sulfur, resulting in a fire that burned until Thursday. Authorities urged residents to evacuate until the situation was deemed safe, allowing them to return home on Thursday afternoon.

Following the securement of the scene, a temporary gravel road was constructed to facilitate the process of removing the railcars. CSX reported that all 16 cars had been removed from the scene by 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Efforts to clean up the spilled contaminants and impacted soil were carried out expeditiously, with approximately 2,500 tons of affected soil replaced with “clean material” by early Sunday. Repairs were projected to be completed by noon on Sunday.

For assistance related to the train derailment, individuals are encouraged to contact CSX at 1-800-805-9840, with a reimbursement center available on School Street from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday for any wage loss or out-of-pocket expenses. Additional details about the incident and available resources can be found on CSX’s website.
