Kenneth Branagh resumes role as Detective Hercule Poirot in A Haunting in Venice following a disastrous seance led by Michelle Yeoh’s character

The highly anticipated trailer for the film “A Haunting in Venice” made its debut on Wednesday. This supernatural mystery is based on Agatha Christie’s novel “Hallowe’en Party,” which was published in 1969. Renowned actor Kenneth Branagh takes on the role of Detective Hercule Poirot, who finds himself attending a séance led by psychic Mrs. Reynolds, played by the talented Michelle Yeoh. Set in Venice after World War II, the decaying palazzo becomes the backdrop for a disastrous event during the séance.

Tina Fey’s character, Ariadne Oliver, convinces Detective Poirot to observe the séance with her, as she is skeptical about the authenticity of psychics. She exclaims, “I’ve encountered countless fake psychics in my lifetime.” Despite his own reservations, Poirot agrees to participate as an observer.

The objective of the séance is for one of the attendees to communicate with her deceased daughter, Alicia. Mrs. Reynolds confidently states to the detective, “I can speak to the dead, Detective, even if you doubt it.” The grieving parent at the séance expresses her longing to hear her daughter’s voice once again. Mrs. Reynolds reassures the attendees, stating, “If someone desires to be heard, we are here to listen.”

As the séance unfolds, a chandelier mysteriously shatters, accompanied by other eerie occurrences. Suddenly, Mrs. Reynolds begins speaking in the voice of a young girl, uttering the word “Mama.” The grieving parent, shocked and desperate for answers, exclaims, “Alicia? What is happening?” Meanwhile, Mrs. Reynolds appears to be possessed by the deceased child, spinning in her chair and accusing someone of murder.

A moment of chaos follows as a woman appears to drown, leaving Ariadne screaming in terror. Detective Poirot confidently asserts, “Somebody’s dead.” Determined to uncover the truth, he ominously declares, “No one shall leave until the murderer is revealed.” A fellow attendee suggests that a ghost is responsible for the murder, but Poirot firmly believes there must be a rational explanation.

A masked individual on a boat captures Poirot’s attention. Ariadne implores him to accept that he is facing something far greater than his expectations. Poirot meticulously examines a water faucet, but suddenly finds himself pushed into a sink filled with water, struggling to breathe. It turns out the water was merely a hallucination, but as he lifts his head and gazes into the mirror above the faucet, he glimpses a girl with wet hair standing behind him. However, she vanishes when he turns around.

Poirot spots a young girl hiding behind a doorway and remarks, “You have been hiding here all this time.” Curiously, Ariadne approaches and asks, “Who are you talking to?” When they both look back, the girl has disappeared. Mrs. Reynolds interrupts, teasingly stating, “You were saying?”

Poirot insists that something in the house attempted to kill him. Ariadne cryptically warns him not to look for the culprit among their circle of friends. Poirot responds, “Every murderer was once someone’s close acquaintance.” Meanwhile, Alicia’s distraught mother is seen standing in the rain, with a ghostly figure lurking nearby.

Determined to solve the mystery, Poirot proclaims, “No one shall leave until it is determined whether the living have been killed by the dead.” His attention is caught by a young girl hiding behind a doorway, and he confronts her, accusing her of hiding. Ariadne curiously asks, “Who are you talking to?” When Poirot turns around, the girl has mysteriously vanished.

Kenneth Branagh has previously portrayed Detective Hercule Poirot in Agatha Christie adaptations such as “Murder on the Orient Express” in 2017 and “Death on the Nile” in 2022. Now, in “A Haunting in Venice,” he once again brings the beloved character to life. The film, set to be released on September 15, features an impressive cast including Jamie Dornan, Emma Laird, Kelly Reilly, and Camille Cottin.
