Bungie has recast Commander Zavala in Destiny 2 following the unfortunate passing of actor Lance Reddick earlier this year. Taking on the role is Keith David, widely recognized for his performances in acclaimed films like The Thing, They Live, and Nope. David will step in as the new English-language voice of Zavala.
David’s portrayal of Zavala will commence with Destiny 2‘s upcoming expansion, titled The Final Shape, set to release in 2024. Bungie has confirmed that Reddick’s existing lines in Destiny 2 will remain unchanged for the upcoming release.
Expressing his gratitude, David stated in a brief blog on Bungie’s website, “I am honored to continue the great work of Lance Reddick as Zavala. Lance portrayed the character’s integrity so exceptionally. My goal is to build upon that.”
Bungie and David have collaborated before during the Halo series, where David lent his voice to The Arbiter. With a 40-year acting career, David possesses extensive experience in video game voiceover work, including standout roles in the Mass Effect, Saints Row, and Call of Duty franchises.

Lance Reddick, renowned for his notable performances in HBO’s The Wire, the John Wick films, and Bungie’s Destiny games, passed away in March at the age of 60. As Zavala, he had been an integral part of the Destiny community, particularly for Titan-class players, throughout almost a decade. Zavala remains a pivotal figure in the Tower and the overall storyline of Destiny.
