Keeping it Light on the Palate: Exploring Southeast Asian Delicacies at This Spot

Golden Gibbon started as a hidden gem of a bar, serving exquisite cocktails, but has now transformed into the ultimate destination for Southeast Asian fusion cuisine. Step into this fine dining lounge in Salcedo Village, Makati, and you’ll feel like you’ve entered a luxurious tropical forest. The walls are adorned with beautiful Monstera leaves, and playful ape figures hang from the ceiling. As you enter, you’ll be greeted by a gibbon dressed in a monk’s robe, deep in contemplation before a temple statue. The entrance to Golden Gibbon is bathed in warm neon light, and the velvet rope stanchions give it a red-carpet ambiance.

Since its opening in late 2022, Golden Gibbon has expanded its menu, offering both exceptional drinks and delectable food. Recently, they introduced a course meal option that focuses on fish, fruit, coconut milk, light broths, and crackling rice. We had the pleasure of trying their newest dishes, and they provided a gastronomic experience that was indulgent yet light. The restaurant’s interiors boast an open kitchen next to a wall adorned with gilded portraits of apes. Instead of the usual complimentary bread basket, the restaurant serves fried rice crisps with a miso-aioli dip.

As we settled into our seats, with a live DJ providing the soundtrack, we began our culinary journey with the crispy rice crisps and dip. It was a refreshing change from the usual heavy bread basket and allowed us to fully enjoy the meal that followed. Next up was a delightful noodle soup with rice noodles and a flavorful beef broth that resembled the aromatic goodness of a well-made pho. The ribeye sukiyaki, though delicious, was presented on a wooden stick that felt a bit unconventional and took away from the overall experience.

After the soup, we were served the “Som Tum,” a tantalizing green papaya Thai salad adorned with pan-seared scallops, toasted peanuts, chicken floss, and crunchy rice crackers. The first bite revealed a spicy kick, which was perfectly complemented by sips of Amaretto Sour. For dessert, Golden Gibbon offers a unique twist on the classic Mango Sticky Rice, featuring a burnt meringue slab that adds a delightful contrast to the freshness of the mango. Another standout dessert is the Coffee Panna Cotta fused with white mocha and topped with chocnut, sticky rice, and a touch of passion fruit. These desserts are both flavorful and refreshing, showcasing traditional Filipino flavors with a modern twist.

From the first course to the last bite of dessert, Golden Gibbon presents a captivating Asian fusion culinary experience with a tropical flair. Located in Escala Salcedo, L.P. Leviste Street, Makati, Golden Gibbon is a must-visit destination for those seeking a unique and luxurious dining experience. For reservations, please call 0927 924 2102.
