Aug. 1 (UPI) — Wide receiver K.J. Hamler has been diagnosed with a mild heart irritation and will be taking a temporary break from playing for the Denver Broncos.

Hamler revealed on Instagram that he experienced “chest pains” while working out before training camp and was subsequently diagnosed with pericarditis, a condition that involves swelling and irritation of the tissue surrounding the heart.

The Broncos decided to waive Hamler with a non-football injury designation on Monday night.

“I have a comprehensive treatment plan, including medication, and I will be taking a brief break to address this issue so that I can return to doing what I love,” Hamler said.

Pericarditis affects approximately 28 out of every 100,000 individuals in the general population each year, according to the National Organization for Rare Disorders. The American Heart Association describes the condition as “often mild” and states that it can resolve with rest or simple treatment. However, in rare cases, it can lead to abnormal heart rhythm and death.

“I intend to make a comeback on the field, stronger than ever, as soon as possible this season,” Hamler stated. “I’m in great physical condition, and dealing with this setback is incredibly frustrating for me. Many of you may be familiar with my story and the challenges I’ve faced both on and off the field in recent years.”

Hamler expressed frustration with the irritation, as he was ready for a “breakout year.”

“I will overcome this obstacle, just like I have overcome everything else on this journey,” Hamler affirmed. “I will continue to rise. This is not a farewell or a goodbye; it’s a temporary pause for the sake of my health.”

Hamler, a second-round pick by the Broncos in the 2020 NFL Draft, totaled 381 yards and three touchdowns on 30 receptions during his rookie season. In 2021, he only recorded five catches for 74 yards in three games. Last season, he had seven receptions for 165 yards in seven games.

Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Hamler had already dealt with injuries to his hamstring, knee, chest, and head throughout his first three seasons.

During Monday’s practice, the Broncos also lost wide receiver Tim Patrick to a leg injury. Sources indicate that Patrick is believed to have suffered a torn Achilles, which would likely end his season. Patrick missed the entire 2022 season due to a torn ACL.

Among the other wide receivers on the Broncos roster are Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, Marquez Callaway, Marvin Mims Jr., Kendall Hinton, Jalen Virgil, Michael Bandy, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, Brandon Johnson, Taylor Grimes, and Montrell Washington.

The Broncos are scheduled to play their preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals on August 11 in Glendale, Arizona.
