Juneteenth Celebrations to Commemorate at Greek Theatre Concert and Leimert Park & El Segundo Festivals

A concert at the Greek Theatre, featuring Vice President Kamala Harris, will be held on Monday to commemorate Juneteenth, the federal holiday that symbolizes the liberation of enslaved individuals in the United States.

The event, titled “Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom,” will showcase performances by renowned artists such as Miguel, Charlie Wilson, Adam Blackstone, Kirk Franklin, Nelly, Jodeci, SWV, Davido, Chloe Bailey, Coi Leray, Muni Long, and Mike Phillips.

The concert will take place at 5 p.m. and will be broadcasted on CNN and OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.

A Juneteenth festival will be hosted in Leimert Park from noon to 9 p.m., with dedicated sections celebrating family, music, and Black liberation. The festival will feature three main stages, two DJ stages, and a spoken word stage.

In Recreation Park, El Segundo, the second annual Juneteenth Festival will run from noon to 6 p.m. The festival aims to promote Black excellence in the arts and support Black-owned businesses through various showcases. It will include live music, arts and crafts, a kids zone, food trucks, contests, and giveaways.

The Juneteenth celebration at the Ovation Hollywood shopping center on Hollywood Boulevard will take place from noon to 4 p.m. It will feature live music, vendors, a photo booth, games, and educational resources.

The fourth annual Juneteenth Drive-Thru Parade will start at 1 p.m. near La Brea Avenue and Manchester Boulevard and conclude at Inglewood City Hall.

Juneteenth commemorates the day when Union Army Gen. Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. The order announced the freedom of all slaves, as declared by the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln on September 22, 1862, which declared all slaves free in Confederate territory.

Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.

On Monday, U.S. post offices, federal offices, schools, and banks will be closed to observe the holiday. President Biden stated in his proclamation that Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the fundamental belief in equality and the promise of America to treat every individual equally.

“That is the promise of America that every generation is charged to keep alive.”
