June 30, 2023 Edition: Letters to the Editor

The Issue at Hand: A submersible vessel, named Titan, journeyed to the site of the infamous Titanic wreck, resulting in a devastating implosion that claimed the lives of five individuals. Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate and an experienced undersea explorer, took a gamble by leading this high-profile, high-risk expedition. While it may have been his personal choice, it was not his right to endanger his fellow explorers who were unaware of the risks, all for the sake of financing his ventures and boosting his own ego, contrary to the advice of others. The loss of life was truly horrifying, with massive costs and rescue efforts required, leading to nerve-wracking experiences for families and rescuers alike. Lawsuits should be brought against Rush’s company as a means to bring an end to such reckless behavior. However, this situation begs the question – how was Rush able to get away with this? Shouldn’t there be better regulation and oversight for these types of explorations and submersibles? It is truly disheartening to witness the tragic, yet sadly predictable, outcome of one man’s arrogance. This incident involving Titan should be marked as a preventable tragedy.

Rosemarie Kaupp from Warrington, Pa., raises an important concern regarding Rush’s apparent disregard for safety and construction standards. It seems evident that Rush had a death wish, as his nonchalant attitude towards safety can only be interpreted in this manner. Jane Hardcastle from Minneapolis, Minn. goes a step further and describes Rush as a predator, emphasizing the grave consequences of his actions.

The Titan serves as an example of how wealthy individuals seek out meaningless “adventures” to entertain themselves and impress their peers. Despite the fact that this expedition aimed to explore the remains of a shipwreck that resulted in the loss of many lives, it lacked any true purpose. The tragedy that unfolded with the implosion of the poorly designed Titan is reminiscent of the countless deaths that occur during attempts to climb Mt. Everest, despite it being a well-documented feat. If people truly seek valuable and meaningful adventure, they should consider joining the military, becoming police officers, or firefighters. These professions offer ample opportunity for adventure, along with proper compensation. It is time to embrace reality and leave make-believe to the realm of children.

Robert DeCandia from New Hyde Park aptly compares diving to the Titanic in a poorly constructed submersible to going over Niagara Falls in a wooden barrel. While adventure and pushing boundaries can be worthwhile pursuits, the submarine in question should never have been allowed in such dangerous waters, let alone descending to such depths. One does not need to be a member of the Cousteau family to understand that reaching a depth of 2 ½ miles requires expertise and careful planning. This serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers present in these environments. Perhaps it would be wise to entrust such explorations to true experts, who possess the necessary knowledge, resources, and understanding of the risks involved.

While there is already an abundance of information available online regarding the Titanic, including captivating images, Michael D’Auria from Bronxville suggests that this should be enough to satisfy one’s curiosity. There is no need to undertake dangerous expeditions when the information is readily accessible from the comfort and safety of one’s own home.

Ron Spurga from Manhattan sheds light on an unfortunate aspect of this situation – the fact that taxpayer dollars were wasted on the search for the Titanic, while there are pressing issues such as pre-K children in Harlem struggling with food insecurity. This highlights the misplaced priorities and inequalities within our society.

Bill Westfield from Kerhonkson acknowledges Stockton Rush’s exceptional salesmanship, but questions his capabilities as an engineer. This raises further concerns about the qualifications and expertise of those leading these expeditions.
