June 16, 2023: Expressing Opinions – Letters to the Editor

The Issue at hand revolves around the indictment of Daniel Penny for the fatal restraining hold that resulted in the death of Jordan Neely. As a hypothetical defense attorney for Penny, it would be crucial to highlight cases of others who have experienced attacks on subways without receiving any assistance from bystanders (“Indicted,” June 15). If possible, I would present evidence of an attack on a woman who was knocked down and mercilessly kicked while a man initially attempted to help but fled once the attacker confronted him. Tragically, the victim lost an eye during the incident. It is highly likely that she would have desired someone like Penny to come to her rescue.

Notably, both the stories “Penny ‘Manslaughter'” and “Train knife-slay vic punched gal” (June 15) share a common theme of the overall failure in providing protection for the citizens of New York City. These incidents reflect a community where individuals are left to fend for themselves due to the increase in crime, homelessness, and a decline in law enforcement. This situation is alarmingly reminiscent of the 1970s, and if left unaddressed, it implies more unfortunate incidents are on the horizon.

One thing is certain – elections have consequences, particularly in New York. The consequence in this case is Penny’s indictment after his courageous act, potentially saving the lives or preventing harm to fellow subway riders on that fateful day. It is worth mentioning that Penny served as a Marine prior to the chokehold incident, underscoring his commitment to protect others.

Had the voters of New York elected Rep. Lee Zeldin, the GOP candidate, over Gov. Hochul, radical Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg would have already been removed from office. The Marine hero would be hailed as a savior. Unfortunately, the voters chose incompetence, allowing Bragg to continue inflicting harm on the city’s residents. Those who voted Democrat last year must face the consequences of their choice, potentially resulting in the imprisonment of an innocent man.

The grand jury’s indictment of Penny serves as an official declaration of what law-abiding New Yorkers have long believed – New York City is beyond redemption. When a 24-year-old former Marine can be charged and indicted for risking his life in defense of others trapped in a subway car, it becomes evident that the rule of law and rational thought no longer prevail. It is obvious from using a restraining hold that Penny had no intention of killing the assailant, but rather acted in self-defense and in defense of others. This city not only embarrassed itself but also demonstrated its unworthiness of Penny’s service. Now, his fate rests with 12 jurors.

New York City has managed to eradicate the timeless tradition of offering help to those in distress. A person coming to the rescue of another in need symbolizes the epitome of goodwill, even in the face of great danger. Given the city’s mishandling (or lack thereof) of crime, it is not surprising to witness such a terrible indictment. However, one can only hope that a brave and courageous individual like Penny would come to the aid of anyone enduring a situation beyond their control. Rather than jail time, this young man deserves recognition and praise. Let us pray for him and hope that justice prevails.

While the mayor remains oblivious to crime in the subways and on the streets, brave New Yorkers will continue to defend themselves. What happened to the nightly sweeps? Perhaps it is time for the mayor to prioritize enforcing public safety for tax-paying, voting citizens over indulging in dinners and photo-ops. Allocating more resources to assist the most vulnerable individuals in New York, while reducing expenditure on luxury hotels for illegal immigrants, is crucial. It is imperative to cease interference with the police and stop giving undue importance to Rev. Al Sharpton and his followers. It is time to become the mayor that New Yorkers had hoped for.
