What have union bosses said?
RMT general secretary Mick Lynch stated that the action would “shut down the tube” and emphasized the importance of the workers. Lynch criticized plans by Transport for London (TfL) to cut jobs and attack worker pensions, urging London Mayor Sadiq Khan to oppose the government’s damaging agenda.
Finn Brennan, Aslef’s full-time organizer on London Underground, explained that the union joined the strikes because proposed changes would make it impossible for drivers to manage their personal lives outside of work. Brennan urged London Underground management to respect trade union opposition and not push through detrimental changes.
How has Transport for London responded?
Glynn Barton, chief operating officer of TfL, expressed disappointment with the RMT’s decision to strike and called for the union to engage in discussion to seek a resolution. TfL clarified that there are currently no proposals to change pension arrangements, although they are exploring various options to ensure job security and avoid asking employees to work additional hours.
The RMT has also announced that 20,000 rail workers across the UK will strike in July.
