An Urgent Call for Action: Addressing the Flaws in New York State’s Justice System

The current situation in the New York state Legislature necessitates immediate attention and reform. The prevailing practice of leniency towards criminals while hindering the effectiveness of law enforcement and prosecutors is proving to be ineffective, perpetuating a system that fails to deliver justice to law-abiding citizens.

The recent case involving Scotty Enoe, a CVS employee charged with murder after defending himself from a shoplifter, serves as another tragic example of the system’s breakdown.

It is undeniable that the justice system’s failure to appropriately penalize individuals like Charles Brito, who had a significant criminal record, contributes to a sense of impunity that encourages criminals to continue their unlawful activities. This failure ultimately led to Brito’s death and the subsequent murder charge against Enoe.

Perhaps it will take a groundswell of public outcry and a shift in voting patterns for the indifferent lawmakers to comprehend the urgency of the situation. The time for action is now, New York.

The notion that shoplifting is a non-violent crime is fallacious. While it may not inherently involve violence, it can quickly escalate into a violent situation.

Scotty Enoe, an overnight CVS employee, simply intended to fulfill his duties when he was confronted with a shoplifter. In that brief interaction, Enoe’s actions to defend himself effectively outweighed the earnings he would have made if he had engaged in shoplifting for a mere ten minutes. It is disheartening to witness the criminalization of self-defense.

A shoplifter assaulted a CVS employee who acted in self-defense, resulting in the thief’s death. This tragic outcome is a direct consequence of Democratic legislators’ reluctance to impose adequate sentencing on criminals.

Compounding the issue is the irresponsible approach of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who sends an incomprehensible message to victims, discouraging them from defending themselves or others against brutal assaults due to the prospect of potentially facing murder charges and lengthy imprisonment.

All of this could have been prevented by the straightforward and morally justifiable action of incarcerating the lawbreaker from the outset.

Once again, Alvin Bragg has taken the side of a repeat offender and is prosecuting a security officer for acting in self-defense. Bragg receives support from individuals like Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, who absurdly perceive criminals as victims of “white supremacy.”

While the governor and mayor turn a blind eye, the streets fall under the control of outlaws, leaving the police powerless and denying victims the right to defend themselves.

Regrettably, New York City now finds itself in the wrong hands. Consequently, those who once found the city desirable for living and working have lost the freedom to walk its streets safely.

New York City’s prosecutors have reached new lows. Only in this city are victims of crime charged for protecting themselves through self-defense, as seen in the recent case involving a CVS employee fending off an assailant.

The deteriorating criminal climate has led me to refrain from visiting New York City altogether. It won’t be long before the city becomes reminiscent of “Escape from New York,” a dystopian film where the city is walled off and controlled by criminals in the absence of police presence.

It is no wonder that people are choosing to move away.

Paul Burgdorf

Latham

New York City’s current officials demonstrate a failure to uphold and enforce the law, leaving citizens with no choice but to take matters into their own hands.

What is truly concerning is that these actions will continue as citizens reach their breaking point, feeling neglected by city officials.

A society descends into chaos when criminals are allowed to roam freely, violating the rights of individuals. However, it appears that Bragg and his cohorts do not share this concern, as they enjoy the protection of the police while the rest of the citizens yearn for the same level of safety and security.
