The Los Angeles Dodgers’ star pitcher Julio Urías, who previously served a 20-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy in 2019, has now been arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence, as confirmed by authorities on Monday.
Despite leading the National League in wins in 2021 and earned run average in 2022, the 27-year-old pitcher was taken into custody late on Sunday and was subsequently released on a $50,000 bond early Monday morning.
Reacting to the news, the Dodgers made a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter), saying, “We are aware of an incident involving Julio Urías. While we gather all the facts, he will not be joining the team. The organization will refrain from commenting further at this time.”
The Dodgers are set to begin a three-game series against the Marlins in Miami on Tuesday.
Details regarding the events leading up to the arrest have not been made immediately available. The Los Angeles Police Department, speaking to City News Service, revealed that Urías was apprehended by Exposition Park police. Although the state Department of Public Safety, authorized to enforce laws within the park, was unreachable for confirmation of the arrest.
It is worth noting that the area experienced substantial congestion on Sunday evening due to a highly-anticipated soccer match between LAFC and Inter Miami at BMO Stadium. Esteemed Argentinian player Lionel Messi, who is a member of the Miami club, participated in the game. Reports from the Los Angeles Times state that Urías was among the celebrities present at the event, with fellow Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw also in attendance.
This season, Urías has achieved an 11-8 record with a 4.60 earned-run average.
Since his debut with the Dodgers in 2016, he has accumulated a lifetime record of 60-25 with a 3.11 ERA.
In 2019, Urías faced a suspension enforced by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred following an incident in the parking lot of the Beverly Center on May 13 of that year. It was reported by TMZ that a witness called the police, claiming that Urías was engaged in a heated argument with a woman and physically pushed her to the ground. Officers arrived at the scene and spoke with the woman, who denied any physical altercation and maintained that it was solely a verbal dispute.
Although Urías was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic battery in relation to that incident, no charges were ultimately filed.
