Judge Halts Ex-Rep. Katie Hill’s Revenge Porn Lawsuit against Former Husband

A judge has placed a temporary hold on the revenge porn case filed by former Rep. Katie Hill against her ex-husband until the conclusion of her bankruptcy proceedings.

In December 2020, Hill sued her former spouse, Kenneth Heslep, and multiple media organizations in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging the unauthorized publication of nude photos of her. Heslep is the only remaining defendant in the case.

Judge Serena R. Murillo has issued a stay on the case due to the ongoing bankruptcy proceedings and has scheduled a status conference for December 21. Although there were no appearances from either party during the hearing, the judge has ordered Anthony Friedman, Hill’s attorney, to prepare a status report before the December session.

In a sworn declaration, Hill’s lawyer, Carrie Goldberg, reveals that her client filed for bankruptcy in June 2022. According to Goldberg, only the bankruptcy trustee has the authority to pursue Hill’s claim against Heslep, as the remaining claims belong to the debtor and are solely under the trustee’s administration.

The media defendants were previously dismissed from the case on the grounds of free speech, and Hill was subsequently ordered to pay thousands of dollars in attorney’s fees.

Hill submitted a comprehensive sworn declaration opposing the dismissal motion of one of the media defendants.

“My nudity should not be a matter of public interest,” stated Hill. “Furthermore, even if my alleged relationship was considered newsworthy, that does not justify the illegal global dissemination of my nude image. I experienced humiliation and trauma due to the circulation of this image.”

In her court documents, Hill claimed that she lived in constant fear of Heslep, stating that he would harm them both, including their pets, if she ever tried to leave. Her court papers also detail the extreme emotional distress she endured, including an attempted suicide and being forced to resign from her position as the representative of California’s 25th Congressional District, which is one of the most sought-after jobs in the world.

Hill and Heslep finalized their divorce in October 2020.

Hill, a Democrat, resigned from office in 2019 after the publication of the nude photos and revelations about her involvement in a three-way relationship with her husband and a campaign staffer. She was also accused of having an affair with a member of her congressional staff.

In her 2019 Congressional speech, she publicly blamed her ex-husband for the release of the photos, denouncing a “misogynistic culture” that eagerly consumed her private images and allowed her abusive ex to continue his mistreatment, now with the entire nation as witnesses.

The 25th Congressional District encompasses the Santa Clarita Valley, portions of the northern San Fernando and Antelope Valleys, and eastern Ventura County. It had been historically held by Republicans until Hill’s victory over former Rep. Steve Knight in 2018.

The seat is currently held by Republican Mike Garcia.
