MANILA, Philippines—Guard Juami Tiongson of Terrafirma led the team with 15 points, although he struggled with his shooting percentage of only 33% from the field, in their 85-72 victory over San Miguel Beer in the PBA On Tour at San Juan Arena on Sunday.
Despite his shooting woes, Tiongson remained the focal point of Terrafirma’s offense.
Coach Johnedel Cardel said in Filipino, “I’m not really worried. I told Juami that he’ll be the one we’ll look for on offense. Of course, the opponents’ plan would be to stop him, which would make it hard for us to win.”
“We talked to Juami and told him to be a threat, be a leader, make stops, and contribute assists. And that’s exactly what happened. Even though he only scored 15 points, which is rare, his other statistics improved.”
Tiongson compensated for his poor shooting by recording six assists and three steals.
Cardel also praised Ed Daquioag, another guard, for his significant contributions to the team, especially after recovering from an injury. Daquioag scored 13 points with an efficient 57% shooting, including two three-pointers.
Cardel said, “Ed’s really one of my veterans, he’s one of the players who really thinks, so we need him to step up.”
The Dyip will conclude their preseason campaign on July 26 against the undefeated Magnolia Hotshots.
