Joy Behar, host of ‘The View’, attributes ‘hubris’ as the cause for overlooking Titanic sub

In the latest episode of “The View,” Joy Behar highlighted both the irony and hubris surrounding the missing submersible on its way to explore the remains of the Titanic. Behar, aged 80, pointed out that while the submersible had been certified to withstand depths of 4,265 feet, the wreckage of the Titanic rests at 12,500 feet below the surface. This mismatch in depths raised suspicions and drew parallels with the original disaster caused by human incompetence and hubris. Behar emphasized the sad and scary nature of the situation.

Alyssa Farah Griffin, one of Behar’s co-hosts, also shared her thoughts, highlighting the parallels between the Titanic and the current situation. She emphasized the ultimate power of nature, stating that even the wealthiest person on the Titanic couldn’t escape the forces of an iceberg. Griffin further expressed her fascination with the depths of the ocean, acknowledging that there are still unexplored areas that remain horrifyingly mysterious.

The missing submersible, owned by OceanGate Expeditions, disappeared approximately one hour and 45 minutes into its journey on Sunday. With only four days’ worth of oxygen aboard, rescue teams have been working tirelessly to locate and rescue the five passengers aboard.

Recent reports have revealed that this is not the first time an OceanGate submersible has encountered issues. In 2022, a similar experience costing $250,000 went dark for a few hours after losing contact with the guiding ship. Additionally, an expert who was previously part of an expedition to the Titanic ruins commented on the danger of incidents in the deep ocean, emphasizing the lack of awareness one would have before experiencing such a catastrophe.

Rescue workers have reported hearing banging sounds in the area where the submersible disappeared, evoking memories of the unsuccessful recovery efforts for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 in 2014. There are concerns about the safety of OceanGate’s vehicles following this incident.

In 2018, OceanGate faced problems related to quality control and safety after a former director of marine operations, David Lochridge, raised concerns about non-destructive testing on the hull of the Titan submersible. Lochridge claimed that he was wrongfully terminated after bringing these issues to the attention of OceanGate’s founder and CEO, Stockton Rush, resulting in a lawsuit.
