Journalists at MGN face allegations of intrusive investigation into Paul Whitehouse’s former partner

The legal battle between Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN) and Fiona Wightman, the ex-wife of a comedian, took a turn when Wightman entered the witness box at the High Court in London. Wightman, who is one of several people suing MGN, alleged that journalists from MGN newspapers, including The Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror, and Sunday People, engaged in unethical practices such as phone hacking, “blagging,” and using private investigators for unlawful activities. Wightman claimed that after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and underwent surgery, journalists began doorstepping her, asking about her illness. Her ex-husband, who supports her claim, stated that journalists also doorstepped her parents and tried to access her medical records, which caused her significant stress. He expressed his disbelief and said, “It’s sick.” The court was told that Wightman and her ex-husband had a tumultuous relationship and divorced in 2003. Wightman is suing MGN over two Daily Mirror articles that she claims involved the unlawful acquisition of highly personal information about her divorce. Her ex-husband stated that the articles made her life more difficult, and he criticized the intrusion into their private lives by journalists. Wightman testified that the legal proceedings had taken a toll on her physical and mental well-being, causing anxiety and sleeplessness. She said that she had to discuss highly personal and challenging experiences in court. In her written statement, Wightman expressed her unforgiveness towards MGN and described the publication of personal information for financial gain as immoral. MGN admitted to instructing private investigators to unlawfully obtain personal information in several instances but denied intercepting Wightman’s voicemails or hacking into her ex-husband’s communications. MGN also argued that Wightman’s claim was filed too late.
