In a shocking turn of events, Joshua Schulte, a former CIA software engineer, has been convicted not only of stealing classified information but also of possessing child sexual abuse images. A jury delivered its verdict in Manhattan federal court, revealing that Schulte had over 3,000 images and videos of child sexual abuse hidden in encrypted areas of his home computer. The content depicted the sexual abuse of children as young as 2 years old. Schulte, who is currently awaiting sentencing, could face decades in prison for this conviction, in addition to his conviction last year for leaking classified CIA secrets via WikiLeaks. Schulte has been held without bail since 2018.

This is not the first time Joshua Schulte has made headlines. In 2018, the former CIA employee was charged with stealing classified national defense information from the agency. The stolen information eventually became public when WikiLeaks began releasing some of the CIA’s hacking tools. Schulte has been indicted on several charges, including theft of government property, unauthorized access to a computer to obtain classified information, and the receipt, possession, and transportation of child pornography. It is clear that Schulte’s actions have had severe consequences.

According to the indictment, Schulte accessed and altered a computer system operated by the US Intelligence Agency in order to cover up his activities and block others from accessing the system. This manipulation of the system granted Schulte the ability to delete records of his actions. In January, it was revealed that Schulte was under investigation for the theft of CIA spying tools. William F. Sweeney Jr., head of the New York FBI office, strongly condemned Schulte’s actions as a betrayal of the nation and a violation of his victims. Prosecutors have announced additional charges against Schulte, including the illegal gathering and transmission of national defense information. If convicted, he could face a lengthy prison sentence. These developments have sent shockwaves through the CIA and the intelligence community.
