Jonathan Taylor remains on PUP list; Colts opt not to trade the RB

The Indianapolis Colts did not complete a trade for Jonathan Taylor on Tuesday as they did not receive a satisfactory offer for their All-Pro running back, according to sources at ESPN.

Despite efforts on Tuesday, Taylor remains on the physically unable to perform list, rendering him ineligible for the first four games of the season.

This means that Taylor will miss games against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens, and Los Angeles Rams.

The Colts may have another opportunity to trade Taylor before the NFL’s Oct. 31 deadline.

If no deal is reached by then, the Colts have the option to use the franchise tag on Taylor and attempt to trade him during the next offseason.

Last week, the Colts gave Taylor and his representatives permission to engage with other teams in search of a trade partner, which was an unconventional approach. The team set a deadline of 4 p.m. on Tuesday for a deal to come together, aligning with the NFL’s roster reduction deadline from 90 to 53 players.

This deadline also marked the Colts’ decision on Taylor’s roster status as he had been placed on the active/physically unable to perform list until now. Taylor has not participated in preseason practices or games due to ankle surgery.

Taylor’s situation with Indianapolis dates back to May when the team opted not to offer him a contract extension in his final year of his rookie deal. Despite leading the NFL in rushing in 2021 with over 1,800 yards, Taylor faced setbacks with his ankle last season. Seeing his teammates receive extensions, Taylor expected similar treatment.

However, when it became clear that the team was not open to reconsidering their stance and as Taylor observed the contracts of other elite running backs, he began to push for a trade.

General manager Chris Ballard was questioned about Taylor’s contract during training camp, to which he responded, “We’ll address those decisions in due time.”

Later that day, Taylor quietly requested a trade. The Miami Dolphins showed interest, but the Colts’ initial asking price of a first-round pick deterred other teams.

In Taylor’s absence, the Colts’ running back unit consists of Zack Moss, Deon Jackson, and rookie Evan Hull. Moss is still recovering from a broken arm suffered in training camp and has never exceeded 481 rushing yards in a season. Jackson’s career-high is 236 rushing yards from last season. The Colts recently released veteran Kenyan Drake among other players in the position.

ESPN’s Stephen Holder contributed to this report.
