Joint Task Force Established by Law Enforcement Agencies to Combat Smash-and-Grab Crimes

Law enforcement agencies in the County of Los Angeles have collaborated to establish a task force dedicated to investigating, apprehending, and prosecuting individuals involved in retail theft. Recently, businesses have been experiencing a surge in smash-and-grab incidents, prompting the need for this task force.

During a press conference on Thursday morning, Mayor Karen Bass introduced the Organized Retail Crimes Task Force, which will specifically focus on addressing organized retail crimes within the county. This task force comprises detectives and investigators from various law enforcement agencies including the Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol, Glendale Police Department, Burbank Police Department, Beverly Hills Police Department, Santa Monica Police Department, U.S. Marshals Apprehension Task Force, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Task Force.

Additionally, prosecutors from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, and the California Attorney General’s office will collaborate with the task force, ensuring that suspects are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Mayor Bass emphasized that anyone who commits a crime will be apprehended. The surge in retail thefts by large groups targeting specific malls with high-end merchandise has become a growing issue in the Southland. Suspects employ various techniques such as breaking glass display cases and cutting security cords, resulting in significant losses for retailers. According to the LAPD, each incident has caused several hundred thousand dollars in damages.

During the press conference at City Hall, LAPD Deputy Chief Blake Chow emphasized that these criminal acts undermine our sense of security when engaging in retail activities. The Los Angeles Police Department is determined to take swift action and will not tolerate these offenses.
