Experience the 39th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, a state-sponsored event that unites nature enthusiasts in volunteering for the betterment of beaches. Join thousands of volunteers who are passionate about preserving the beauty of our coastlines!

On Saturday, Sept. 23, over 700 cleanups commenced across various counties in California, making the California Coastal Cleanup Day the largest annual volunteer event in the state. In fact, this incredible initiative has earned recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest single-day volunteer event on the planet.

During the 2021 event, approximately 36,000 volunteers statewide gathered, teaming up with the California Coastal Commission to remove an astounding 363,000 pounds of debris. Since its inception in 1985, this event has witnessed the participation of 1.7 million volunteers, who have collectively eliminated over 26 million pounds of trash from California’s beaches and inland shorelines.

This year’s Coastal Cleanup Day is themed “You’re Bigger Than You Think.” This mantra captures the powerful impact volunteers can make when they unite for a common cause. By devoting a few hours of your time on a September Saturday, you can contribute to the ongoing protection and preservation of our coast.

Not only is the California Coastal Cleanup Day crucial for the beauty of our beaches, but it also plays a vital role in preserving the health of our oceans. Due to California’s storm drain system, litter and debris are not adequately filtered out. Consequently, heavy rains wash trash into the sewers, ultimately polluting the ocean. This year, with the exceptionally wet winter Southern California experienced, the need for trash removal is more significant than ever.

Kate Huckelbridge, the executive director of the Coastal Commission, expressed immense pride in providing an outlet for Californians to demonstrate their dedication to preserving the coast. By participating in this event, you become part of an ongoing commitment to protect and safeguard the natural beauty of our shores.
