“Britain embodies its true essence on an overcast day,” shares photographer Johny Pitts, originally from Sheffield. He captured a moment featuring three men and three pigeons outside partially renovated flats on Jamaica Road in Bermondsey, London. Pitts had a fascination for significant architectural concepts from the postwar era.
“I used my phone as a sketchbook to document my discoveries,” Pitts explains. You’d be surprised how quickly things can vanish. While many photographers believe that capturing the decisive moment revolves around people, often it’s the street furniture and buildings that abruptly transform and modify the environment that initially captivated you.”
Pitts admits that he wouldn’t have taken the time to capture this particular scene with one of his 15 professional cameras (including a Fujifilm X-Pro3, Ricoh GR III, Konica Hexar, and Yashica T4). “Using a less subtle camera might have raised objections from these gentlemen,” Pitts notes.
Although he occasionally enjoys venturing out to shoot without the distractions of his phone’s other functions, when he does use it, he keeps Instagram sharing in mind and shares the geolocation with his followers. “I appreciate the phone as more than just a camera but also as a connected device to satellites and maps. By searching the geotag of this image [latitude 51.49843123838731, longitude -0.061613484250885635], you can see what’s there at this moment. The men will have disappeared, lending a spectral quality to the photo. It becomes a portal.”
