John Lautner-designed Long Beach residence re-enters the market at $3.4M, just one year after previous sale- Orange County Register

A stunning home in Long Beach, designed by renowned modernist architect John Lautner, is now on the market for $3.4 million, just one year after its last sale.

Situated on a nearly two-third-acre lot in the picturesque Park Estates neighborhood, the Alexander House is a beautiful ranch-style home spanning 2,886 square feet. Originally completed in 1951 and updated over the years, it boasts four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a wide cantilevered overhang that extends the interior, creating multiple entertainment areas.

County records indicate that the property was sold in September 2022 for $3.042 million, which is 3% above the initial asking price of $2.95 million (source: Press Telegram).

Upon entering the property, you’ll find the original facade hidden behind a long privacy wall. The exterior maintenance is incentivized by the Mills Act, offering property tax savings.

Inside, the home’s open floor plan features vaulted beamed ceilings, brick and concrete floors, built-ins, and glass walls that allow natural light to flood in. The living room is anchored by a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace, while a dining room, den, and a kitchen equipped with top-of-the-line Thermador, Miele, and AGA appliances complete the main living space.

The bathrooms have been tastefully remodeled to match the modern aesthetic of the home.

Although the home incorporates contemporary elements, John Lautner’s original vision remains unchanged and has even been realized. His archived drawings at the Getty Research Library reveal an initial proposal for a pool in the backyard, which has now been transformed into a breathtaking infinity-edge saltwater pool with a lanai deck and spa. The outdoor amenities also include an outdoor kitchen, a fire pit, and a bar area.

According to Keegan Cin, the listing agent from Cin Coast Realty at eXp Realty, the seller has recently made upgrades to the property, including the addition of a solar pool heater and an electric vehicle charger. However, due to constant business travel, the client has decided to sell the home in hopes that it will be enjoyed by a family who can appreciate it full-time.

John Lautner practiced architecture for 55 years in Southern California, leaving an indelible mark on the region. After apprenticing under Frank Lloyd Wright, Lautner designed unique properties such as the iconic Chemosphere in the Hollywood Hills and the concrete-domed Elrod House in Palm Springs, which was featured in the 1971 James Bond film “Diamonds are Forever.” Lautner passed away in October 1994 at the age of 83.

If you’re interested in exploring this architectural gem, don’t miss the open house weekend hosted by Cin Coast Realty at 5281 E. El Roble Street. The event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on September 1, featuring chef-prepared bites and showcasing the work of local artists whose creations are displayed in the staging. The house will also be open for viewing from 1 to 4 p.m. on September 2 and 3.
