John Harris Appointed as Politico’s Chief Editor

Politico announced on Monday that its top U.S. editor would be stepping down from his position. In his place, one of the publication’s co-founders, John Harris, will take over as the new editor while also assuming additional responsibilities for Politico’s international editions. Matt Kaminski, who joined Politico nearly ten years ago from The Wall Street Journal, will conclude his tenure as the editor in chief at the end of August, according to an email sent by Goli Sheikholeslami, Politico’s chief executive, to the staff on Monday.

Sheikholeslami explained in her memo that Mr. Harris, who previously served as the editorial chair, will now have an expanded role overseeing all of Politico’s editorial units. She clarified that Mr. Harris is not returning to a previous position but is stepping into a new role as the company’s top editorial executive, managing newsrooms in both the United States and Europe.

Furthermore, Sheikholeslami mentioned in her email that once Mr. Kaminski completes his role as editor in chief, he will assume the position of editor at large at Politico. In this capacity, he will focus primarily on writing.

This recent change in leadership marks the latest in a series of shifts within Politico’s top ranks. In March, Dafna Linzer, the executive editor who reported to Mr. Kaminski, stepped down from her position after one year. At that time, Kaminski acknowledged in an email to staff members that he and Linzer had diverging views on Politico’s strategic direction.

It’s important to note that Politico was founded in 2007 by Mr. Harris, along with Jim VandeHei and Robert Allbritton. In 2021, the German publishing giant Axel Springer acquired Politico for an impressive $1 billion.
