President Joe Biden wholeheartedly welcomed the remarks of former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley after she criticized the voting records of her fellow Republicans at the first GOP presidential debate on Wednesday.
During the debate in Milwaukee, Haley targeted several GOP rivals, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), and former Vice President Mike Pence, for their votes in favor of increasing the national debt. She also took a swipe at former President Donald Trump, under whom she served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Trump had opted to skip the debate.
In an apparent reference to the approximately $7.8 trillion increase in the national debt during the Trump administration, Haley declared, “And Donald Trump added $8 trillion to our debt, and our kids are never going to forgive us for this,” as reported by the Washington Post.
“What she said,” wrote Biden in his caption alongside a video clip of Haley’s remarks.
Biden also made other not-so-subtle references to the debate. He took aim at biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who claimed that the “climate change agenda is a hoax,” leading to boos from the audience.
“Climate change is real, by the way,” Biden later tweeted on X (formerly Twitter).
Haley also acknowledged the reality of climate change during the debate.
“We do care about clean air, clean water — we want to see that taken care of, but there is a right way to do it,” she stated on the debate stage.
“The right way is, first of all, recognizing that climate change is real. But if we truly want to make a difference in the environment, we should start pressuring China and India to reduce their emissions.”
