Jimmy Kimmel came up with a vivid description for the actions of far-right Republicans when they ousted Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the speaker’s office. Following the Republicans’ failure to elect a speaker, McCarthy attempted to blame Democrats for voting against him in the past. However, Kimmel quickly dismissed this notion and said, “No, no, no. We’re here today because your own party kicked you out like a tray of leftover salmon cakes from last weekend’s HomeTown Buffet.”
McCarthy was reportedly angry because he had hoped that Democratic lawmakers would come to his aid after members of his own party on the far-right forced him out. Kimmel also shed light on the offer that Republicans made to House Democrats, which was essentially: “You give us the votes we need to elect a speaker, and we’ll give you nothing in return except for calling you a bunch of communists and groomers.”
Initially, Republicans chose Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) as McCarthy’s replacement. However, when Scalise failed to secure enough votes, they turned to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who also fell short in his bid for the gavel on Tuesday. As a result, the House has now been without a speaker for two weeks, causing a stall in business.
