Jimmy Carter to Lead Presidents and First Ladies in Mourning and Celebrating Rosalynn Carter

Rosalynn Carter, the late former First Lady, will be laid to rest at a funeral service on Tuesday at Glenn Memorial Church in Atlanta. The event is part of a three-day program celebrating Carter’s life following her passing at the age of 96. It will be attended by all living U.S. first ladies and multiple presidents, including her husband, 99-year-old Jimmy Carter.

The funeral will be attended by President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden, as well as former presidents Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush. Also in attendance will be former first ladies Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, and Laura Bush. Notably absent will be former President Trump.

Jimmy Carter, who is currently in hospice care, will attend the service, marking his first public appearance in several months. His grandson will be one of the speakers at the event. Rosalynn Carter will be remembered for her lifelong advocacy for mental health care and her role in supporting her husband’s political career. The former First Lady will be honored by musical performances from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood.

The funeral will be followed by a private service and graveside burial in Plains, Georgia, the couple’s hometown. The burial plot will be visible from the front porch of the Carter’s home. This will be the final farewell to the second-longest living first lady in U.S. history.
