Jill Biden Contracts COVID with ‘Mild Symptoms’ While at Her Beach Home

Jill Biden, the First Lady of the United States, has tested positive for COVID-19, her office confirmed on Monday night. However, President Joe Biden has tested negative for the virus. At 72 years old, Jill Biden is experiencing only mild symptoms and will be staying at their home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The news comes as COVID-19 cases continue to rise globally.

The couple spent Sunday night together at their beach home in Delaware before Joe Biden traveled to Philadelphia on Monday for a Labor Day speech. The president also made a stop at their Wilmington home, where the Secret Service is carrying out work, before returning to Washington, D.C. to start his work week.

On Saturday, the first lady accompanied the president to Florida to assess hurricane damage before heading to their Delaware beach home. In a statement, Jill’s spokesperson, Elizabeth Alexander, said, “This evening, the First Lady tested positive for COVID-19. She is currently experiencing only mild symptoms and will remain at their home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.”

Following this announcement, the White House Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, stated that President Biden has tested negative for COVID-19 after the first lady’s positive result. Both the president and first lady have previously contracted COVID-19, with Jill Biden being treated in August of last year and subsequently experiencing a rebound case.

Despite being fully vaccinated and receiving booster shots, neither the president nor the first lady have recently worn masks in public. This comes as Dr. Anthony Fauci acknowledges that while there is evidence that masks can be protective at an individual level, the data on their effectiveness in stopping the spread of the virus on a larger scale is less strong.

Former President Donald Trump, who had a severe case of COVID-19 in October 2020, has criticized the recent increase in cases, accusing the left wing of fearmongering. Trump particularly emphasized the use of mail-in ballots during the 2020 election and claimed that this played a role in his perceived loss.

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, President Biden is expected to attend the G20 summit in New Delhi, India, this week. The first lady, however, will not be attending. The president will undergo regular testing and monitor for symptoms.
