Jet Bridge Causes Door to Rip off American Airlines Flight, Leading to Cancellation

  • An American Airlines flight from Dublin to Philadelphia was canceled on Sunday.
  • Social media images revealed that the airplane’s door had fallen off.
  • A spokesperson for the airline attributed the incident to a “jet bridge malfunction.”

An American Airlines flight destined for Philadelphia had to be canceled on Sunday after its door unexpectedly detached while it was preparing to depart from Dublin Airport.

Twitter posts circulating images of the Boeing 787 reveal a noticeable void where the door should be, with the door itself lying on the tarmac below.

An Aer Lingus-branded jet bridge can be seen positioned beneath the door-hole in the aircraft fuselage. Additional social media pictures of the incident capture fire trucks attending the scene.

In a statement given to Insider, an American Airlines spokesperson clarified that no passengers were on board at the time and the damage resulted from a “jet bridge malfunction.”

Jet bridges are typically attached to the airport terminal gate but must be repositioned to allow aircraft approach and then extended for passenger access. Some designs also permit lateral and vertical movement controlled by a trained operator.

The Boeing Dreamliner registered as N812AA was scheduled to depart for Philadelphia approximately two hours after landing from Chicago. However, the door separation occurred, leading to the flight’s cancellation, as corroborated by data from Flightradar24.

“An American Airlines aircraft incurred damage due to a jet bridge malfunction at Dublin Airport (DUB). There were no passengers or crew members on board, and no injuries were reported,” conveyed an airline representative.

“We have dispatched a replacement aircraft to operate the affected flight, which is projected to depart later this afternoon. We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience caused and express our gratitude to our team for their professionalism.”

Insider’s request for comments from a Dublin Airport representative remains pending.
